Creating space for the UK's creatives

New Report: The Creative Workspace Crisis

Drawing on five years of data from 14 major UK cities, Design District’s new research report, ‘Creating Space for the UK’s Creatives’, uncovers a growing crisis in the UK’s creative economy: a chronic shortage of affordable, flexible and appropriately sized workspaces.

Despite generating £124bn for the UK economy each year, the creative industries have grown by just 5% since the pandemic – far behind other sectors. Rising workspace costs are squeezing margins and threatening the UK’s position as a global leader in creativity.

The report highlights how creative clusters – including Design District – are vital to economic growth, innovation and placemaking.

  • 2.4 million

Jobs supported by the UK creative industries

  • 23%

Drop in office space leased to creative tenants

  • 27%

Fewer creative businesses taking on new workspace

  • 4430 sq ft

Creative occupiers take less space than the UK average

KEY FINDINGS: Data reveals that workspace is increasingly out of reach for creative tenants.
